Matt Gerhard, Organist

Matt Gerhard currently serves as Director of Music at Kokomo Zion Church. From 2016 through 2025 Matt was the Assistant Choir Director at Northwestern MS/HS. In February of 2025 Matt became organist for the 8am Mass at Saint Andrew Episcopal in Kokomo, and in September 2025 Matt begin directing the Cougar Choir at Indiana University Kokomo. 

Matt earned a Bachelor’s in Church Music from Olivet Nazarene University (2008) and a Master’s in Choral Conducting (studying with Dr. Gary Bonner) from California Baptist University (2010). 

Matt has studied classical and church organ with Rev. William H. Brown, Dr. Timothy Nelson, and Dr. Beverly Howard. He has had coaching in theatre organ and silent film accompaniment from Mark Herman, Bob Salisbury, and Justin Stahl. His piano studies have been with Amy Shumway and Dr. Gerald Anderson.

As a recitalist, Matt performs regularly in Indiana, Illinois, and beyond. He has performed repeatedly for such institutions as Olivet Nazarene University, the Joliet Theatre Organ Enthusiasts, and the Central Indiana Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society. Matt also performs pre-show theatre organ music at the Warren Performing Arts Center and the Hedback Theatre in Indianapolis, and the Long Center in Lafayette. In gospel music Matt has shared the stage with nationally known artists such as Josh Townsend, the LeFevreQuartet, the Kingsmen, and the Perrys.

Since 2023 Matt has been the pre-show theater organist for thePurdue Musical Organization’s annual Christmas show performing 45 minutes of Christmas music before each of the presentations.

Matt serves as President of the Central Indiana Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society, Secretary of the Kokomo Symphonic Board, and is a member of the Indiana Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association and board member of the Indiana Region of the Cadillac and LaSalle Club.

Matt has three albums of organ music, one of piano music, and album featuring piano, organ, and congregation available to stream or download on most major digital platforms. His piano recording Telling My Blues Goodbye is available on CD as well.
